Printing press roll alignment for multicoloured images

printing_press.gif (7103 bytes)

PROBLEM:
A multicoloured image formed on a printing press is actually four images overlaid precisely on one another. The basic ink colours are yellow, cyan, magenta and black. When they are mixed in the proper proportions they make all the other colours.
The important part is to align the printing rolls to get a precise overlay. In most of the large presses in use in the USA today the process involves controlling the alignment of two slave rolls to a master role.

SOLUTION:
When you see a clean, clear, sharp, multicoloured image in your newspaper, it may have been controlled by a three (3) inch Short Longfellow. Many printing rolls use Short Longfellows to provide the control signal for continuous rapid dynamic alignment.

ENVIRONMENT:
The Short Longfellow was chosen because of its high level of accuracy, repeatability and reliability in a harsh environment where it is continuously subjected to paper dust and lubricating fluids.
