Pressure Sensor Applications
Gas Industry Applications
Wellhead Delivery Pressure and Flow
Transducers/Transmitters: STX 2000,
STX 2100, PTX
500, PTX 600, PTX 7000, PTX 1400
This industry uses as standard, 2-wire 4 - 20 mA pressure transmitters. Their normal requirement is the IS or flameproof device and the requirement is for NACE standard
devices.
Distribution of Gas
Transducers/Transmitters: STX 2000,
STX 2100, PTX
500, PTX 600, PTX 7000,
PTX 1400
Measurement of pipeline pressures and pressure at compressor stations on the main distribution grid.
Pressure reduction stations to supply local networks.
Mass flow measurement to large consumers normally using pressure volume and temperature compensation
techniques.
Flow and Pressure Monitoring Systems
Transducers/Transmitters: STX 2000,
STX 2100, PTX
500, PTX 600, PTX 1400
R & D work is normally carried out at the main Engineering Research Stations. Most of the work is gauge or differential pressure measurement and quite often IS certification is
required.
Special Gases
Transducers/Transmitters: PDCR 2100, PTX 2100, STX 2100
Bulk storage of oxygen, nitrogen, helium and CO2 for industrial processing requires the tank contents to be known.
Have fitted transmitters/transducers because level switches are unreliable and fail to indicate when a re-ordering situation is reached. This often results in unnecessary visits by the tankers with additional distribution/delivery costs.
The differential output represents the liquid content within the tank and the monitoring system indicates when re-ordering is
necessary.
Mass Flow Systems
Transducers/Transmitters: PDCR 4000, PDCR 1000,
PTX 1400, PTX 7000
Large consumers are billed in terms of energy content of the gas and this requires mass flow measurement instead of volumetric flow as used for small domestic consumers. Mass flow computation requires measurement of pressure, volume and temperature of the supply of gas with an electronic computation to the mass value.
NB Mass flow calculation always use absolute measurement datum.
Gas Manufacturing Plants
Transducers/Transmitters: PTX 500,
PTX 600, PTX
1400, STX 2000, STX 2100
Supplier of gas manufacturing plants to industry, and the systems use the various transmitters for gauge and absolute measurement.
For oxygen systems, special cleaning methods are required before installation and as the units operate in open positions, sealing to IP65 is usually
required.
Pressure Reducing Stations
In bygone years, most of the pressure reducing stations on the British Gas network were underground. This made any maintenance work difficult and caused problems with any seepage of gas being difficult to remove without forced ventilation systems.
These pressure reducing stations are slowly being updated. This is partly due to the distribution pipeline pressure rising and partly just due to refurbishment of all equipment.
When this updating takes place, the reducing stations are put above ground for convenience of maintenance and other safety aspects. When these units are refurbished, a number of transmitters are required for each reducing station. They are typically 1 off at 40 bar at the main transfer pressure level and one at the distribution pressure. High accuracy is not a requirement, however the project is very competitive on price, hence the PTX 500 series is often called for.
