Water Authority Applications

Regional Water Authorities

Transducers/Transmitters: 1830 & 1730 Series, PMP 4030, PDCR 35D

Depth measurement, borehole level, reservoir depth, river level, storage tank level, open channel depth measurement of flumes, weirs, etc., using PDCR and PTX. For sewage applications the IS version of these devices is often required.

Distribution/pipeline pressure measurement using 1000 Series.

Devices are often required to be submersible and therefore depth measurement versions of the above units are often supplied with a pressure fitting rather than a depth nose cone.

Sand filters are often used in water treatment works and the condition of the sand is monitored by the differential pressure drop across the filter, and this is usually in the region 0 to 500 mbar.

On large installations the signal will be used for local indication and to operate into the control telemetry which initiates a cleaning process as necessary.

Many of these installations are in exposed positions and the units should be installed with due regard to lightning protection.

See the applicable Depth/Level Application Note.

Flood Relief System

Delta Technical Systems are putting in a flood relief system. The transmitters are used to measure the level of the rivers covering a very wide area. These depth measurements are then used to control sluice gates on these rivers to control the amount of water travelling down them and hence prevent flooding on a large scale.

Because of the type of contract, this was a low cost exercise and the PTX 530 was used. There are however, problems with the PTX 530 in that errors can be incurred due to an air bubble forming in the pressure connection giving a false reading. With the accuracy on this project however, this was thought to be irrelevant.
