Air Brake Storage Tank Leak Detection
Project Overview:
System must check three internal compartments and external welds for leakage. Leak rates of 1x10-² std. ml/sec. must be detected.
System Description:
Dual Channel system, the first channel consists of 8 microphones summed into one channel. The second channel consists of one .60" diameter microphone with 5/8" threaded fitting, alarm threshold set points, relay contact closure and white noise sensitivity validation.
Two stage testing: The internal compartment is checked first. A 0.60" microphone is screwed into a 5.8" threaded fitting of the center section. The two outside sections are pressurized to 300 psi. The internal .60" microphone is activated to detect leaks in the internal chambers. Stage two: All three compartments are pressurized to 300 psi. Eight microphones placed strategically around the external surface of the tank, are activated to detect for any leakage to atmosphere.
Autoclave Pre-Leak Warning System
Project Overview:
At a nylon manufacturing facility there are autoclaves that have heat transfer coils filled with a flammable heat transfer fluid. Within the coil is a helical stirring blade. Should the blade move off tolerance and rub on the coil, a leak can occur that could cause a catastrophic event. The object of the system is to detect impact or rubbing of the stirring blade on the coils.
System Description:
The system consists of a 12 channel system with sensors placed strategically so as to cover any possible contact/rub event. There are two alarm set points per channel. One is a high alarm to notify of an unacceptable event, the other is a low set point to alarm should power be disrupted. Should an event occur, the system signals an alarm and transitions a relay contact closure. There are two alarm points, one to give a warning and one to notify control personnel of an unacceptable condition that needs immediate attention.
Extruded Tubing Leak Detection
Project Overview:
As extruded tubing is processed, it is pressurized at 20 psi and enters a quench bath. The leak inspection is to occur as the tube enters the quench bath, before it is dried by high pressure air knives. The inspection system must not be influenced by the intense white noise generated by the air knives and must detect leaks in the tubing.
System Description:
A dual system with water resistant microphone housings and shielded microphone enclosure. The shielding has proven effective in isolating the test procedure from the high pressure air knife sounds. The extrusion passes under the microphone housing. Should a leak be present, the air will cause bubbles to form in the water creating a minor "cavitation" effect which is detected by the system. The unit has an alarm/reject system with adjustable setpoint and relay contact closure.
Propane Tank Leak Detection
Project Overview:
Propane cylinders are to be inspected for leaks automatically. The system must be capable of testing 9000 tanks per shift and locate leaks as low as 1x10-³ std. ml/sec.
System Description:
4 each single channel system with 6 each summed microphones, adjustable alarm set points, relay contact closure, white noise sensitivity verification option.
Each propane tank is pressurized with air and sent through a test station. Ultrasonic microphones are placed within an acoustic isolation chamber to prevent false readings from stray ultrasonic signals that may be present in the manufacturing area. Six ultrasonic microphones are positioned around all weld sites.
When a leak is detected the system's reject mechanism is activated.
